Soil

The top layer of the earth, typically consisting of a mixture of many minerals, decaying organic matter, liquids, gases and live organisms. The soil provides the fertile ground of plant growth, contributing all necessary chemical components with the exception of carbon, which is taken up from carbon dioxide in the air.
