advanced economies
seem to have become much more energy- and resource-efficient during the past decades, emitting far less greenhouse gases per unit of economic output. Unfortunately, the largest part of those improvements exist only on paper, as globalization and the related de-industrialization have driven the "heavy lifting" elsewhere.
Coming Soon: Energy use per unit of GDP in advanced economies is declining. Unfortunately, this isn't because those have become so much more efficient in terms of energy and resources use, but because they have begun to import finished goods from abroad at scale. On a global level, energy and resource productivity are improving at a very slow pace, if at all.
